Circular

Economy

The global Circular Economy is estimated to contain $5 trillion of unlocked value.

Waste and recycling is the end of product of the related concept of the Circular Economy.

As opposed to our traditional Linear Economy, where resources are used to make things, after which they are used by consumers and then disposed of to landfill, the Circular Economy seeks to remove resources from the process and reinject them at each stage.

This includes designing out excess resources, improving manufacturing efficiencies, distributing to customers in more efficient or innovate ways, and collecting used resources for reuse or recycling.

This minimises the material being "wasted" at the end and instead creates a circle as resources are redirected back towards the manufacturing and distribution sections of the process.

At The Diverter, we focus on the opportunities to reuse and recycle goods that have been used and avoiding disposal to landfill where the resource value is lost.

More than most parts of modern society we are quietly pleased with the initiative and action that participants in Australia’s waste and recycling industry are showing to move our economy to a Circular Economy, where waste resources following consumption are collected and reused again in new products and services.

In extremely difficult times for the recycling sector in particular, the resilience and proactivity demonstrated by organisations such as Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) operators and specialty recyclable and organics processors is already producing new systems and infrastructure. These new industry elements are vital to the formation of a complete suite of solutions for higher value recycling in coming years servicing municipal and business collections.

With new technology, recycling and other aspects of a circular economy are now achievable and we look forward to reviewing and supporting the use of new equipment and processes to achieve resource recovery that was previously expensive or problematic. We are on the verge of an exciting time in Australian and global waste and recycling management and with collaboration between government, business, not for profits and the general public we are confident that dreams will be cleverly developed into reality in the not too distant future.
